An emergency may occur anytime. And we do not know where we will be when a survival situation happens. It could catch you in your car, at home, in the office, on vacation and in many other locations. An emergency may be a short term one or a long term one. To be able to cope with any type of emergency you need to become prepared.

Each emergency preparedness plan should include several key components. We will describe some checkpoints for you to check yourself. If you could say “yes” for each one of them – you are prepared to any possible types of emergencies.

Make sure you and your family members have survival kits each time you participate in any outdoor activity. You need to have such a kit when you go hiking, boating, fishing, skiing etc, to be able to survive if you get separated from the rest of the group.

You should also have a detailed emergency plan. All your family members need to know what to do and where to go if an emergency occurs when everyone is away from home.

You need to get emergency preparedness kits and supplies for your home, your car and your office. It is impossible to predict where an emergency could catch you.

Your emergency kit must include a 72 hour supply of food and water for each person. Plus you need to have a flashlight, a first aid kit, some matches, warm blankets and a radio. Some other things you need to have are: soap, toothpaste, toilet paper and female items; extra cloths for each family member, can opener, batteries. You need to have some cash as ATM machines might not be working during an emergency. Do not forget about your IDs or their copies. If any of your family members wear glasses you need to have an extra pair of them in your emergency kit as well.

When storing emergency foods you need to rotate and change them regularly. Canned and dry foods should be stored in a cool and dry place. Drinking water should be refreshed every 6 months. You need to make sure all your foods are fresh by eating the oldest ones and replacing them with the new ones.

One more important thing is to be aware of possible risks and emergencies in your area. You need to stay informed about everything that is going on around you. This way you will be able to make necessary steps right in time.

You emergency plan should also include an evacuation rout. You need to keep certain amount of emergency food packed to be able to take with you anytime. It is advisable to choose lightweight foods for this purpose.
